DMT launches online system for driving license renewals

Colombo, Sept. 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) today (30) launched the first stage of an online system to make the renewal of driving licenses more efficient.

With effect from today, temporary licenses will be issued by the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI), Nugegoda.

According to officials, applicants who obtain their medical certificate from NTMI can now begin the renewal process directly through the new online platform, without visiting the DMT office in Werahera.

The initiative is expected to reduce public inconvenience and streamline services at the DMT.

Excellent, Excellent initiative!! My driving license is due March, 2025, now I do not have the agony to go through in DMT office in Werehara. Needless to say the status of DMT License offices, everyone who got the driving license can narrate their bitter experiences.

That’s great news. I’m living abroad, and I called the Sri Lankan embassy here. They said I have to go to Sri Lanka to renew my driving license—what a waste

Open a DMT office at the divisional secretariat to renew the licenses. driving license should last at least 10 years like the passport. people have other tings to do than renewing driving licenses

This outdated system is yet another example of red tape affecting our people. In the UK, this process can be completed online, and time-consuming medical screenings like this are not required. Why must we come to a specific Medical Center, wasting both valuable time and money? Why can’t the authority to issue this medical report be extended to all government and private hospitals? If the UK can implement a streamlined system, why can’t Sri Lanka? Do we consider ourselves superior to the UK?
