Customs seize Rs.32 million worth Cannabis oil sent by mail

Colombo, March 14 (Daily Mirror) - A Customs Inspector who tried to clear a consignment of Cannabis oil worth over Rs. 33 million sent from the USA to a local addressee, was apprehended by the Sri Lanka Customs at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) today.

Officials at the Customs Narcotic Control Unit sensed a suspicious package that had arrived in the country through air mail addressed to a recipient in Malabe a few days ago.

Customs Spokesman Additional Director General Seevali Arukgoda said the authorities arrested the Customs Inspector who had come to clear the goods with an authorized letter from the recipient.

They found nine bottles of thick Cannabis oil with a high concentration weighing up to 3.2 kilograms. The narcotics had been valued at Rs. 32 million with a gram of Cannabis oil having a street value of Rs.10, 000.

This comes in the wake of an attempt by a Customs Inspector to clear a large stock of smuggled cigarettes from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this week, which had been foiled by the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) officials.
