Colombo, Feb 10 (Daily Mirror) - An employee attached to a private cleaning company at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was nabbed by the Sri Lanka Customs officials while attempting to smuggle out gold worth over Rs. 58 million early this morning, sources said.

Officials of the Customs Narcotic Control Unit stationed at the BIA Arrivals Terminal on suspicion searched a female staff member of a private cleaning company to find gold concealed in her handbag.

Customs spokesman and Senior Director Seewali Arukgoda told the Daily Mirror that the suspect was about to leave the airport after finishing her duty shift when she was apprehended.

The sleuths found gold jewellery and gold gel weighing up to 2,700 grams from the suspect’s handbag. The 53-year-old female suspect has been detained for further inquiries.

First of all, we have to arrest these corrupt customs officials. They are the main culprits behind the smuggling.
