Colombo, Marich 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has failed to come up with a proper timetable which outlines auspicious times for various activities in connection with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year traditions, MP Ajith P. Perera told a briefing today.

"Those in the government may not follow auspicious times, but the people in Sri Lanka do. Therefore, it is essential to have a proper timetable for traditions connected with the New Year," the MP said.

What performance!!, these auspicious times have been going on probably since we got independence! If the Minister/Govt cannot get accurate times and the astrologists are coming up with different times, let the People who celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil new use make their own celebrations with their family and friends and visit the temples of their faith. If the Minister/Govt comes up with auspicious times all the stooges will be bringing the Govt down.

Auspicious time have failed to show positive results. Ajith P is complaining that the government has failed to provide the auspicious times. Nalinda recently said that the times will be announced soon. The issue is different astrologers give different times as auspicious times. Ajith, can you tell us whom to believe, the government astrologer or any other. To me any day any time is auspicious.

What has these rituals brought us to so far, except poverty and indiscipline and fighting each other without any national feeling. Would think as if these auspicious times will make us the paradise we want to be. Are we in year 1026 or 2026? The fact it is meaningless and inaccurate (if at all) is that it needs 20 astrologers each with his own "times", to agree on which times are correct.

Some guys look at the whole thing from the wrong end. Not all Sri Lankans believe in astrology and for most us (like me) it is a pseudoscience and superstition. But the New Year rituals are part of our culture and we all celebrate it. It’s a day of celebration, family reunion and a season for joy. Every nation and every ethnicity have such days. It’s like Christmas, Thaipongal and for the Sinhalese Buddhists and Tamil Hindus this Spring festival - New Year. They celebrate it on 13 to 14th of April often after the Maha harvest and what’s wrong with that? Shouldn’t the government support it? Only a nihilistic group can have a grudge against such a thing! The problem with some sections of the government is they think they can placate one ethnicity by denigrating another be it the majority or minority. All sensible people no matter where they come from cannot condone that. We need unity and prosperity for every Sri Lankan without divisions and every group counts and every festival counts!

We need an opposition to constructively expose the government on shortcomings instead of practicing vengeful politics. When we were children, our parents used the avurudu nekath from Epa Litha. I am now living overseas and would like to know if the Epa Litha is no longer available. I believe it's not the government but the knowledgeable astrologers are the ones who should provide the nekath for the citizens who follow them.
