A young man who had been arrested on suspicion of inflicting cruelty on a pet dog at a house in Edinburgh Estate, Nanuoya, was produced before Nuwara Eliya Magistrate Lankangani Prabuddhika and remanded till September 10.

He is alleged to have beaten the dog with a club, dashed it on the floor, and thrown it into a canal. However, the dog swam to the bank and ran away.

The suspect, Mohana Sundaram Laxan (17), was a resident of the Edinburgh Estate. Investigations revealed that the dog had bitten a cat in his house and caused it injuries, and the suspect retaliated by dashing the dog on the floor and throwing it into the canal. The owner of the dog was a woman living in a neighbouring house.

Another young man who witnessed the incident recorded the scene on video and shared it on social media. The woman, who happened to watch it, complained to the police. Although the complainant and the suspect had reached a compromise, with the latter agreeing to provide treatment for the injured dog, the police arrested the suspect after the incident went viral on social media.

Meanwhile, the Animal Welfare Association requested the police to take legal action for inflicting cruelty on an animal. Executive Member of the Animal Welfare Association, Gihan Dinushka, said a member of the association visited the complainant’s house to look into the condition of the dog.

OIC Nanuoya Police IP W.D.C. Janaka said a statement from the individual who recorded the incident and released it on social media would be obtained.
