Criminals fled country after losing political support: IGP

Colombo, August 28 (Daily Mirror) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed that organised crime in Sri Lanka had previously thrived due to political backing, but the dismantling of such support networks has driven many criminals out of the country.

“Once that political support disappeared, many of these criminals fled the country,” the IGP said.

He said that the Sri Lanka Police are now working closely with international partners to apprehend suspects operating from abroad.

“We are coordinating with foreign missions to track and arrest wanted criminals currently hiding in countries such as India, Malaysia, Thailand, the UAE, Indonesia, Oman, Russia, Belarus, France and several other countries,” he said.

Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Ravi Seneviratne, also emphasised the escalating threat posed by overseas criminal networks.

“Transnational organised crime has become a significant challenge in recent months, with many criminals continuing to direct drug operations and violent crimes in Sri Lanka while hiding abroad,” he stated.

Seneviratne said that many of the suspects are linked to previous crimes involving shootings and large-scale drug trafficking—often carried out under the protection of politically connected figures. He added that several arrests and extraditions have already been made from countries such as India and the UAE, with more joint operations currently in progress.
