Court to hear intervention petitions in Suresh Sallay’s writ petition on August 4

Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Court of Appeal today fixed August 4 to hear several intervention petitions filed both in support of and in opposition to the writ application filed by former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has filed an intervention petition seeking the dismissal of Sallay's writ application, arguing that it could impede the ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

Meanwhile, several other parties have filed intervention applications in support of Sallay's writ petition. They include veteran author Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Ven. Dapane Sumanawansha Thera, Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thera, Senior Consultant Dr. Sakunthala Senevirathna and the Global Sri Lankan Forum.

Sallay has invoked the writ jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal, challenging the legality of any possible arrest or detention in connection with the ongoing investigations into the coordinated terrorist attacks of April 21, 2019.

The intervening parties are seeking leave to intervene in the proceedings and to be added as party respondents to the case.

The Court of Appeal is scheduled to consider all the intervention applications when the matter is taken up on August 4, following the conclusion of submissions by President's Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena who appears for Suresh Sallay.
