Court staff member further remanded over disappearance of heroin from storeroom

Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - The court staff member who was arrested over the alleged disappearance of 12 kilos of heroin worth over Rs. 120 million, which was kept in the storeroom of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, was today ordered to be further remanded till March 20 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali.

According to the CID, the suspect, Mohamed Nias Mohamed Nadmi, was the alleged caretaker of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court production room at the time of the disappearance.

In August last year, following a complaint by then Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the CID began an investigation into the disappearance of 12 kilos of heroin that had been kept as evidence in the court’s storeroom, where various items, including heroin, copper, ice, foreign liquor, illegal cigarettes, gold and more, seized by various police stations, are stored as productions for cases.

Such a high value items should not be accessible by a single person. The room must be accessed with the presence of more than two officials! With such loophole that 12KG heroin missing any evidence can be tempered, destroyed and falsified!

Why do one have to store such items as court evidence. We have the technology. Get a live statement with the confiscated items and destroy it then and there. These items that are kept as evidence slips out of the back door. This is a known fact.
