Colombo, Sep 17 (Daily Mirror) - Colombo High Court Judge Lanka Jayaratne today ordered that the case against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, filed over the alleged acquisition of assets worth more than Rs. 75 million, be taken up again for evidence on October 22.
The indictments were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), alleging that during a five-year period as a Cabinet Minister, Weerawansa had acquired assets and properties that could not have been earned through his Ministerial salary and other legitimate income sources.
When the case was taken up, Deputy Solicitor General Asad Navavi, appearing for the prosecution, informed court that a report relating to the salaries and allowances paid to the accused during his tenure as a Member of Parliament had been submitted to the Commission, and evidence would be led in that regard today.
At that point, Judge Jayaratne observed that since the accused had already received the said salaries and allowances officially during the relevant period, there was no necessity to lead further evidence on that matter.
The Senior Deputy Solicitor General further informed court that all necessary documents to be served on the defence had already been handed over.
President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda, appearing for the accused, submitted that he had not been given adequate time to properly study the case material.
Having considered the submissions, the judge fixed the case for continuation of evidence on October 22, cautioning the prosecution’s witness to be present on that date, should his testimony be required again.
