Court orders suspected fake liquor stock to be sent for Government Analyst’s testing

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga today ordered the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) to send a stock of seized bottles of foreign liquor produced before court as case items that had allegedly turned into plain water and tea colored liquid, for examination by the Government Analyst.

The stock of liquor, consisting of 81 bottles of foreign liquor and 150 bottles of beer, was initially seized in connection with four cases being heard before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 3 in Hulstdorp.

The bottles were scheduled to be destroyed on February 17 before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena. However, the destruction process was halted after suspicions were raised that the bottles may not contain genuine alcoholic beverages.

As a result, the Additional Magistrate ordered that the bottles of liquor be sealed.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has since launched a probe into the incident and submitted a request to send the stock of liquor to the Government Analyst for chemical testing.

Accordingly, the Magistrate issued an order directing that the entire stock be sent to the Government Analyst for examination.
