Court dismisses stay order application on BASL election

Colombo, Feb 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Colombo District Court today dismissed an application for an enjoining order to stay the election for the post of President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), scheduled to be held on February 19, 2025.

Colombo District Court Judge Sandun Vithana refused to grant the enjoining order in connection with a plaint (DSP/63/2025) filed by Attorney-at-Law Lilanthi de Silva.
As the court refused to issue a stay order, the BASL election for the post of President will proceed as scheduled on Wednesday (19).

Former BASL Secretaries Rajeev Amarasuriya and Dr. Sunil Abeyaratne will contest for the position of BASL President for the 2025–2026 term.

Meanwhile, Anura Meddegoda PC, who had submitted his nomination for the post, has recently withdrawn his candidacy.

Upul Jayasuriya PC appeared for the plaintiff. Ali Sabry PC appeared for Rajeev Amarasuriya.

Attorney-at-Law Chathura Galhena has been elected unopposed as BASL Secretary for the 2025–2026 term.
