Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - Five policemen have tendered an apology as per Sinhala tradition during a Supreme Court hearing involving the arrest of three individuals over Easter Sunday attacks.

Five policemen including the OIC of Horowpothana and Kebithigollewa Police stations bowed and tendered apologies to three petitioners who were arrested on suspicion of being associates of Zahran Hashim.

Five policemen tendered this apology to three petitioners as a part of the settlement reached between the parties into Fundamental Rights petitions filed by the petitioners challenging their illegal arrest and detention.

The Supreme Court's three-judge-bench comprised Justices S. Thurairaja, Kumuduni Wickremasinghe and Achala Wengappuli.

Why just allow this kind of settlement. Those people may have being forced to come for a settlement. Should fine such police officers for arresting innocent people without evidence.

is that good enough ?? no punishment for cops abusing their power?

Rala Harmie Tuesday, 02 April 2024 08:31 AM

If you know the names of such cops and have evidence please file a case. Then it will happen. Writing to newspapers wont make it happen.

Apology is the easy way out. If evidence was clear that the arrests were not lawful, the victims should have been awarded compensation with a discount for the apology

Can I do such harm to another like loss of reputation, mental agony for days to these three and their families and get away by just an apology. Cause for concern indeed.
