Cops salute fake police Jeep

Colombo, Sept. 4 (Daily Mirror) - A luxury jeep modified to resemble an official police vehicle—and even saluted by genuine officers—was seized by Kandy police during a raid yesterday morning.

Police said two men travelling in the vehicle were found carrying walkie-talkies similar to those used by law enforcement personnel. Investigations later revealed that the jeep belonged to the leader of an extremist political group. Its original green colour had been altered to dark green, and heavily tinted shutters concealed the occupants, allowing the vehicle to pass off as an official transport used exclusively by senior police officers.

Police made the arrest after officers on duty in the town had repeatedly saluted the jeep for several days, believing it carried a senior officer, even recording the salutes in the official logbook. When no response was ever returned, suspicion mounted, leading them to check the vehicle.

According to police, the walkie-talkies will be examined for links to terrorist activities, while the vehicle examiners will determine whether the jeep was locally assembled.

Further investigations are being carried out by OIC Traffic Branch CI Prasanna Kottegoda under the instructions of HQI Kandy CI Rasika Sampath and SSP Anuruddha Bandaranayaka.
