Colombo, March 28 - The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court sentenced a police sergeant to four years' imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs. 500, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption said.

The Commission said the police sergeant was charged with accepting the bribe from a three-wheeler driver to avoid legal action over a traffic offence.

Following a notification from the Traffic DIG to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption regarding the bribe, an open investigation was conducted.

The Commission then reported the findings to the Magistrate's Court, leading to the filing of a case with four charges.

After a lengthy trial, Judge Prasanna Alwis found the accused guilty on all four counts.

As a result, the police sergeant was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 (Rs. 5,000 for each charge).

In addition , the Rs. 500 bribe amount was ordered to be recovered as a penalty.

Sri Lanka can eliminate bribe taking by Ministers and Govt Officials very easily! The citizens who vote for these ministers are the GIVERS of bribes. If the citizens stop giving bribes, and expose bribe demanders on whatsapp video automatically the country will be free of bribery. Even though citizens blame the 225 and the president for all crimes, increase of taxes etc it is the supreme franchise owners the voters or citizens who are actually the root cause of the problem. Thats why the problems dont get fixed how ever much we change governments. JVP who won the Tissamaharama local govt was not elected at the next election! Why? Because the citizens there realised that they too once they got the power only did what everyone else does and the citizens also did what they always do -they GIVE BRIBES. So Malimawa will also spin the arrow in the direction -

    Jayantha Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:35 PM

So what about prasana R. He asked for a massive bribe and was not even sentenced to one year even.

    Jayasinghe Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:40 PM

If 4 years is for Rs 500 bribe, then how will the sentence be calculated for billion rupee bribes. Will it be jail in this birth and next 2 births. Then, what about sentences for corrupt deals such as undertaking unprofitable projects for financial gain. The system may have to inform God to carry the sentences over many births

Mahinda Pathmaranjan Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:46 PM

What about the Politicians and Government elite class employees?

    Spartacus Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:51 PM

So will fellows like Keheliya who killed civilians by purposefully importing adulterated drugs get higher sentences?

    Gabriella Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:55 PM

Pay the police a liveable wage, so that they don’t have to resort to these sort of practices to survive. Meanwhile, a convicted criminal, Prassana Ranatunga is giving advice on how the country should be to governed.

    Ravi Thursday, 28 March 2024 07:56 PM

Bul…t!! Utter rubbish!! These desperate people will do anything to survive. What about those who plundered the country of $ 60 billion?!

    Sharkie Friday, 29 March 2024 02:44 AM

Ravi, the paradox of law in this country is that, if one can get such large amounts then he has the clout to escape the law. In other words, catch the sprats and leave the WHITE POINTER SHARK like MaRa

    Justice...big boys go free...

    Doctor Thursday, 28 March 2024 08:30 PM

Increase the salary of police who do a good service, wt they are receiving is not at all enough

Be Fair Thursday, 28 March 2024 08:32 PM

If this is proportionately done for Actual Financial Crimes, wow, we will develop like craxy

Sisil Sudesh Thursday, 28 March 2024 08:34 PM

We are lucky that bribery and corruption exists among only the low level government servants. Never among high level officers and politicians. That is some consolation!

Jude Fernando Thursday, 28 March 2024 08:38 PM

This is absolute mockery. True enough a bribe is a bribe but this borders on the ridiculous. The big fry are bribed by the millions but no action whatsoever. God bless Sri Lanka

BIG FISH SWIM AWAY, WHILE THE SMALL GUPIES GET JAIL TERMS. Thursday, 28 March 2024 09:05 PM

WHAT A PRE ELECTION JOKE, BRIBE OF RS.500 GETS 4 YEARS IN JAIL!! WONDER HOW MANY YEARS THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS, THEIR STOOGES AND THOSE IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE WILL GET?. THIS BULL CRAP NEEDS TO STOP, BECAUSE IT WILL NOT DISTRACT THE MILLIONS OF POOR OR STRUGGLING MASSES. WHAT A IDIOTIC STATEMENT TO MAKE, AS THE SAYING GOES WITH THIS GOVERNMENT THE BIG FISH WILL GET OUT OF THE NET AND ESCAPE, WHEREAS THE SMALL FISH WILL BITE THE BAIT.

    Kalla Thursday, 28 March 2024 09:05 PM

500/= Rs for four years. What about for millions roaming freely.

    Christo255 Thursday, 28 March 2024 09:31 PM

Poor police man 4 years in prison for 500 Rs. Sajin vass Rs 100 fine for millions in corruption. Is this justice in SL?

    Citizens Thursday, 28 March 2024 10:25 PM

What happened to those who took billions as bribes?? They are freely roaming around enjoying life. Is this the Sri Lankan law?? IS there a law??

    Joshua Thursday, 28 March 2024 10:38 PM

Whilst the Ali baba of thieves is in parliament safeguarded by the president.

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 28 March 2024 11:28 PM

4 years for Rs 500 is too much, his 4 years in prison will be a burden on Tax payers, one year jail and a big fine would have been sufficient. The cops should get a commission on the fines enforced and collected and penalties for improper fines. This way cops get some incentive too.

    B P Thursday, 28 March 2024 11:43 PM

Aiyo! Sin. Must be a "Pooruwe Pawak"

    Patcitz Thursday, 28 March 2024 11:55 PM

Injustice to a innocent policeman, if the ruling regarded accurate, then the whole policemen should be arrested with immediate effect, as there is no single policeman servicing free from accepting BRIBE. If no bribes accepted are not POLICEMEN.

    Smh Friday, 29 March 2024 03:04 AM

Wow. That seems like a stretch for a Rs.500 bribe. Wonder what the reasoning behind this sentence is.

    Ram Friday, 29 March 2024 04:44 AM

We have a huge imbalance in Bribery matters. The small takers end up in prison whereas the sharks escape. Politicians escape altogether. Prasanna R for 25M received a suspended term that is in appeal. Minister Nimal Siripala asked for Commission and the complainant the Japanese Ambassador was proved to be wrong by a Commission appointed by our RW. Where is the balance

Sen Rajapaksha Friday, 29 March 2024 05:20 AM

Four years for Rs 500, so how long should Nimal Siripala be sentenced for ? just mentioning one name

    Sambo Friday, 29 March 2024 08:11 AM

Then how much should a politician be sentences for the millions and billions he takes as bribes.

    Neil Friday, 29 March 2024 09:04 AM

Four years in prison for Rs500. if Basil is prosecuted, he should go for 1million years.

    DJ Friday, 29 March 2024 09:07 AM

    What a Joke

Kaputupalage Rajapassa Friday, 29 March 2024 11:40 AM

What a disgraceful punishment? Kappam Thunga got millions with photo evidence! Still enjoying Pin Bath and Pin Padi! The legal system need to rewrapped!

    Ronnie Friday, 29 March 2024 02:24 PM

Its good in a way to minimize or stop unwanted activities specialy with public servents taking bribes who have been paid to do a job also must introduce the person who offer must be proscuted and charge with the offence as we'll

    Buddhist Friday, 29 March 2024 05:08 PM

A cop gets 4 years of prison time for accepting Rs 500 bribe while a Cabinet Minister gets suspended sentence for taking Kappam in multiples of Rs 500 - Judiciary in SL is corrupt!

Indra Dasa Saturday, 30 March 2024 04:01 AM

This is a good president for all involved in wrong doings in the country to face heavy charges in the near future when a peoples government comes to power . since four years for 500 rupees bribe make more than 100 years or life incarceration for people who stolen public money during last 50 years when they face law of the country under the new Peoples government in the very near future .
