An investigation into a video which circulated on social media earlier today, which showed a police officer mercilessly  assaulting a civilian, has received wide spread condemnation on social media while police have launched an immediate investigation.

Investigations revealed that the officer had assaulted the civilian, who was a lorry driver after an accident in Pannipitiya this morning.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the incident had taken place when the lorry crashed into the Traffic OIC of the Maharagama Police.

The OIC had been admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

The police constable who had assaulted the driver was present with the OIC during the accident.

The Police Spokesman said that thought the lorry driver was at fault with his reckless driving, the police officer did not have any right to assault the driver in this manner.

"Therefore, we have initiated an investigation into this and we will take disciplinary action against the police constable," DIG Rohana said.

DIG Rohana added that the Nugegoda Division SSP had initiated a special investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera instructed to suspend the constable assaulting the driver .(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya )

This happens when we create a society that has superiors and inferiors. This is being done with impunity to minorities by people in uniform. No action is being taken now it is happening to everyone

    Very true Banda

A country gets the police it deserves, human rights anyone?! This policeman needs to be dismissed and charged with assault, there is another man who strikes the driver in the head with a weapon who also needs charging. This is the law of the jungle.

Not assault but attempted murder as per the video in circulation

Drivers who crash into people get assaulted by the bystanders heavily. Same mentality with the police. You have to discipline reckless drivers by implementing multiple actions. Many reckless drivers get away after bribing the traffic policemen. Policeman in this case should be sent to the jail for taking law into his hand.

For each one recorded like this, how many other similar incidents may have happened and may be happening unknown us?

Third incident on social media about actions by police against the public. Will there be any action by the authorities other than appointing commissions?

The usual punishment is transferring him to another Police area so that he can satisfy his thirst in that area!

My experience is that drivers in Sri Lanka are the most incompetent and reckless drivers in the whole world. Once they get behind the steering wheel, they think and behave as if they are driving a military tank in a large open field. Not a trace of care for other road users, as if he is the only road user at the time.

He is paid by public for his uniform; for his motabike; his food and yet to beat public like this is horrible . It is fault of politics..

Is it surprising that we are condemned at all UN sessions when we have people who do not deserve to be in uniform and practice the jungle law.

    Srilankan Monday, 29 March 2021 10:55 PM

Thuggish politicians, thuggish police and thuggish officials, looks like the UN did the right thing.

Lorry drivers, bus drivers and some three wheel drivers all deserve the same treatment. I would give this cop a promotion.
