Cop arrested for taking liquor bribe over traffic offence

Colombo, April 10 (Daily Mirror) - A Police Constable attached to the Dharmapuram Police Station was arrested by officials from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on charges of soliciting and accepting a bottle of arrack as a bribe.

The suspect was arrested near the Dharmapuram Police Station.

The arrest follows a complaint lodged by a resident of Kilinochchi. According to the investigation, the victim had been riding a newly purchased motorcycle without license plates or a valid revenue license on April 8. The constable had initially demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 to refrain from taking legal action regarding these traffic violations.

When the complainant informed the officer that he was unable to pay the cash amount, the constable reportedly demanded a bottle of arrack instead. To ensure compliance, the suspect withheld a temporary document issued in lieu of the complainant's National Identity Card (NIC) as collateral.

The Bribery Commission conducted a sting operation and arrested the officer while he was in the process of obtaining the requested bribe. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court.
