Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - The Supreme Court rejected a bail application filed on behalf of Harsha Ilukpitiya, the former Controller General of Immigration and Emigration. He has been in remand custody for nearly six months due to contempt of court proceedings.

On September 25, 2024, the Supreme Court ordered Harsha Ilukpitiya to be remanded until the conclusion of the contempt of court proceedings for failing to implement the Court's order regarding the controversial visa deal. This order was issued against the respondent under Section 9(7) of the Contempt of Court, Tribunal, or Institution Act No. 08 of 2024.

Revenge by the courts on a public official who carried out the orders of his direct supervisor who happened to be the Minister. The Minister is roaming free while the poor guy who just did his job is in remand without conviction . The Minister is addressed as Uncle by the current leader of the country so he will not touch him. How can you keep people in remand custody without being convicted of charges. Big time drug dealers and murderers and killer bus drivers are easily getting bail within couple of days. I think justice system is corrupted now.

An official should carry out his duty within the law of the country. Just because the minister or some one wanted to do againt the law he cannot do so. Remember why Shirani Bandaranayake was impeached ? She stood firm as per the rule. These officials who bend down to ministers do so for personal gain againt the public. If he has written instructions from the minister let him produce that . Of face the punishment.

It has already taken 6 months to investigate whether he violated the court order by not implementing it. If making that decision is so complex, how can expect to someone implement same system within short period,? After a few more months, if investigators said the officer had fair reason not to implement it, who is responsible for the six months he spent behind bars? This can happen to any citizen of this country.

SC had long demanded the previous Visa system be re-implemented. This low life decided he is greater than the Supreme Court ignoring the court order. He needs to be kept in remand until he can be sentenced to prison sentence with rigorous imprisonment. Waster of public money under orders of Ranil and SLPP deserves 100 year rigorous imprisonment sentence for his contempt.

This individual must disclose fully to the courts, to the people of Sri Lanka, who, if any, yielded pressure on him to do and not do everything that transpired inside this highly undesirable, controversial visa deal. And yes, he must be given the opportunity to face justice without further delay.
