Colombo, Dec.12 (Daily Mirror) - Ceftriaxone, the antibiotic which caused the tragic and untimely death of a 21-year-old woman in July, has caused another allergic reaction in a patient at the National Hospital Colombo, Daily Mirror learns.
According to informed sources, the patient who was admitted to the hospital on December 09 over fatigability had been administered with Ceftriaxone. Subsequently, the patient has developed complications.
The patient had reportedly experienced numbness in his arm immediately after receiving the vaccine, following which he was admitted to the intensive care unit due to severe complications.
According to tests conducted in the intensive care unit, there has been a significant decrease in both blood pressure and the percentage of oxygen in the lungs.
Furthermore, sources told Daily Mirror that the doctors in the hospital had been informed by last morning not to use Ceftriaxone and, instead, to use alternate antibiotics.
Several attempts to contact a top health official to get a comment over the incident failed.
Ceftriaxone has sparked serious concerns in the recent past due to its association with allergic reactions in multiple patients, resulting in two fatalities and incidents of severe complications reported at hospitals such as Peradeniya Teaching Hospital and Teaching Hospital Kegalle.
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic that is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections.

Any drug can have adverse reactions. For the uninformed this seems an impossibility. I'm only sad that so far Health Authorities as well as medical professionals have not seen it fit to educate the general public regarding this issue rather than cause unnecessary phobia and make politics out of this

Yes it says : An unusual or allergic reaction to ceftriaxone, other penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives, in the side effects of this drug. So unless regularly allergies noted, then no issue.

Starting from the Health Minister to the various layers of health officials, why can’t someone ensure this particular drug is removed from circulation?

Was the Ceftriaxone antibiotic of Indian manufacture. In India itself there is much angst in the last month after Indian government found many drug manufacturers were not following safe processes to make the medicines. It is sad there are not enough Western country made antibiotics, while the is more than enough funds for promotions of military and parades of military, and upkeep of 300,000 plus military. When the public start to despise the size of the military funds can be freed up for more important things.

Are these drugs given by medically qualified scientists who weigh the situations or medical technicians who do not understand the science of medicine?

Ceftriaxone killed few patients in July, including a 21 year old girl, whose blooming era was cut short, none could compensate for a life lost, truma under gone by the demised family, again similiar situation has arosen, has any allergy test done prior to the administration of this drug, if not, it tantamounts to negligence medical norms, proper investigation should be conducted to avoid future occurrences of this delima.

When I visited a Pharmacy last week to get my prescribed antibiotics, the Pharmacist told me that the Gov is not allowing the importation of Branded antibiotics to the country, since its quite expensive.
