Control price for oxymeters: Drug Regulation Provision State Ministry

The attention of the State Ministry of Drug Regulation Provision was drawn to declare a control price for oxymeters, which were used to measure a person's oxygen content during COVID pandemic.
The State Ministry has commenced discussions on issuing a gazette notification by the National Drug Regulatory Authority (NDRA) to control prices.
Accordingly, only three companies were permitted to sell the 'Plus Oxymeter' by the NDRA, the State Ministry said.
However, the NDRA has revealed that the unregistered Pulse Oxymeters have been smuggled into the country through Sri Lanka Customs. It has also been found that these devices are of the lowest quality and were imported from China, they said.
Around 3,500 such inferior quality oxymeters were seized recently from shops in Colombo city following a raid conducted by the Food and Drug Inspectors of the NDRA.
They said it is not possible to measure the accurate percentage of oxygen properly by using inferior oxymeters. However, a Pulse Oxymeter was initially sold at Rs. 1,350.
The owners of pharmacies said that the price went up from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 8,000, the State Ministry added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
