Parliament, Nov. 30 (Daily Mirror)-The contempt of court case filed against MP Roshan Ranasinghe is wrong as no one can file legal action against an MP for the remarks he makes in Parliament, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana said today.
The Speaker made this remark in response to a query by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa in Parliament.
“It is clear that no one can sue an MP for comments he makes in the House,” the Speaker said.
“Let the judiciary handle the contempt of court case and give a verdict,” he also said at the same time.
Sajith Premadasa, who referred to 3 and 4 of the Parliamentary Privileges Act said an MP cannot be sued or arrested for remarks made in Parliament.

I hope the court will make a Court Costs order against the Petitioner and personal costs order against the lawyer who has ill advised his client who is also a lawyer for wasting time of court

At last, the constitution-violating speaker has spoken with a sliver of hope.

If it is accepted by Court that there was no contempt of court in a speech in Parliament by an MP, as per Act of Parliament, then both the Lawyer and Petitioner has to be responsible for wasting court time and suitably dealt with.

ignorance of the law is no excuse particularly for the learned fraternity as explained by the speaker why did the attorney take up the case which is a waste of court time and taxpayers money
