The work on the second terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will begin this year, Minister of Aviation Bimal Ratnayke told Parliament today.
"We will have 30 new gates at the airport by next winter," he said.
Also he pledged to introduce a domestic aviation law to govern domestic air transportation.
"We will use all international airports for domestic air transport as well," he added.

Yes Tax payers money again. Are they making profits at the moment? Why not get the Passport Office up and running first where the people are being inconvenienced? After all people are paying for it upfront and would have to wait for months to get it.

Expansion of the Main Airport is required as there will be more passengers travelling through this airport. There us a tax charged from each passenger so all the money for the project is not coming out of other taxes. Besides , where else should they spend tax payers money, just to keep paying salaries to excess government employees with 24 hour overtime payments.??

People are still struggling with inflation and shortages. Hospitals are filthy and dilapidated, desperately needing sanitation, medicines and facilities. Roads and pavements need repairs and maintenance. Senior citizens are struggling to afford to live. Children lack basic needs, facilities, and nutrition for learning and development. Parents struggle to afford milk and baby food. Things are not as good outside of Colombo city. Stop living in lala land and start visiting places outside colombo city. And the best you can come up with is a new airport terminal! Take care of your own first. Then everything else will take care of itself.

Again bad advice?! Why you can't use Mattala Airport!??? What's the point having that Air Port if we're not using it,!!!This government actions Not different to the previous governments. This is absolutely ridiculous idea when we've a international standard airport in South dryzone and connecting via expressway to city of Colombo in couple of hours. Demand is high for BIA... roundtrip tours and short stays all start either from Colombo or Negambo. MIA only can cater to tourism in southern areas like Yala, Hambantota and Tangalle, too far for other regions. Go and see for yourself.

The funds for this project comes from Japanese tax payers. It's a JICA funded project under a concessionary loan just like the Colombo LTR project that foolish Gota cancelled because it was Patali's pet project. Colombo Airport is one of the most congested in Asia. Even Dhaka and Male will have brand new terminals. Colombo has a huge potential to be major hub connecting Europe, Middle East, Africa, South and South East Asia. Many Indians use Colombo as a transit point. May this project see its completion as quickly as possible and then Sri Lanka can develop Jaffna Airport too.

Since gaining independence 77 years ago we are still dependent on foreign countries and foregn aid to build every major project in the country. We don't have the resources the know how or the expertise to do anything on our own?. When are we going to learn? This country was virtually built from scratch by foreign aid foreign know how and foreign expertise. Othewise we would still remain an under developed country.
