Compulsory school attendance of applicants for A/L exam reduced to 40%: Susil

Instructions have been given to school principals and relevant authorities to consider only 40 percent of school attendance of the school applicants for the Advanced Level (A/L) examinations, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today.

He told Parliament that this relief would apply only to 2023.

The Minister said it was earlier announced to consider 80 percent attendance for eligibility to sit the A/L examinations and that considering various complaints, a decision was taken to consider only 40 percent attendance this year.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

This is hilarious. Are we saying that it is compulsory for all AL students to go to tuition classes now? Only in SL wonder. If this happens in any other country, it will bring national protests. This Minister is essentially saying schools don't really teach anything and students need to go to tuition classes to pass exams. This is the unpublished truth in SL.

Thank you Premajayantha. When we have a Minister like you with actual competencies to become a successful three wheeler driver, this kind of decisions are rewarding towards the discipline expected from our youth and the future of this nation. Remember, if you have a young school going son expecting to do his A'L's next year, allow him to sleep late and miss school and perhaps next year you can reduce this further to 20% attendance. Nice no!!!

This is actually good. Free time is needed for self studies. Otherwise students hv to waste much time uselessly if the mandatory percentage is 80. I personally have witnessed this. It doesn't mean tuition should fill up the free time. Free time should be used to do past papers, model questions and to learn on your own
