November 22 - A group of civil society activists has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against Dr. Archchuna Ramanathan, the newly elected independent MP for the Jaffna District.
The activists asked the CID to investigate remarks made by Dr. Ramanathan in a video he posted on Facebook, which has sparked controversy.
The video, which went viral on social media on November 21, showed the MP sitting in the seat reserved for the Leader of the Opposition during the first session of the 10th Parliament. Despite being asked repeatedly by parliamentary staff to vacate the seat, he refused to move.

Please don’t make a fool out of this story without knowing the facts. I think the 1st day was okay for everyone to sit wherever they wanted to sit. You are making Dr a famous person by reporting this story

His actions only made him look a real idiot. You don't have to behave like that to highlight any issue ! There are better and more smarter ways to highlight any issue !

Sitting anywhere doesn't mean taking a designated seat. This is the calibre of idiots we should not send to parliament.

What Facebook comments are we referring to? Some unemployed men are trying to waste the CID's time because they don't have any. In the eyes of Sri Lankans, Prapahkaran and Rohana W are same. For their cause, they both took a gun. People even the north, forgot all and voted for Rohona's party. If something is good for the goose, it's good for the gander. And so, it is unfair to say VP name shouldn't be mentioned.

Best is do not give unnecessary publicity, he seems a person looking for more attention, but his action in parliament is acceptable and his refusal also allowable as parliament staff did not reserve it for particular parliamentarian, so place is rightfully his for that day, its unnecessary request from parliament’s staff side to return this chair to opposition leader, and I feel SP didn’t make much fuss on it ,but during his father’s presidency there was big controversy over especially made throne like chair used in special occasions, now everybody knows attitudes and behavior of Dr Aarjuna, so people certainly not much serious on him,it seems he is not a lovable character as Mr.Shanakiyan Rasamanickan of TNA,who equally respected by all SriLankans

As a Tamilian, I’m disappointed by this person’s behavior in Parliament. Sitting in an unauthorized seat is unethical and disrespectful. Though I didn’t elect him, we Tamils made a bad choice in bringing him to power. I urge everyone to think carefully before supporting such individuals, and media outlets to stop giving him attention. His objective is to gain positive or negative fame to boost his popularity.

You are another joker to support another joker being a doctor is unable to maintain dignity of the parliament. Tamil diaspora are another gangsters to have funded exorbitant amount by means of 'Undial' which is an illegal method of transferring funds which is money laundering. This fellow will be taught a lesson soon.

In that case he should have sat in the Speakers seat. Change is not about sitting at someone's seat.

On that day, in the main gallery anyone can seat anywhere. Are you aware that the speakers seat is on a ramp clearly separated from the main gallery. Please grow up.

His behaviour ranges from rather childish to pretty stupid. Definitely not worthy of an elected rep. Is he an educated person?

He did nothing wrong as no MP's were assigned seats on the first day of parliamentary sitting. How come there isn't a similar criticism of the opposition leader who was waiting for the seat to be vacated for high and mighty him instead of sitting in the other many unoccupied seats, rather than holding out to occupy 'his seat'. Not surprising as these things are big issues for him. If he sat in another vacant seat this whole saga would have been a non-issue.

It proves how weak the opposition leaders and his useless followers are. On the other hand This vet doc is a true opposition leader. He opposes even traditions. These are the types of idiots who are going to work for the foolish voters who voted him to the bull shed.

He is a poor exchange for the calibre of Sumanthiran. But do not give the doctor attention. His behaviour only demonstrates what kind of an attention seeker he is, and that too indicates the pedigree of politics to which he belongs.

I understand that MPs can sit anywhere they like on the first day of the Parliament. So why this issue is being taken seriously ? Can we get on with issues developing the country as a united corruption free Sri Lanka?

I do not believe CID has authority to investigate affairs inside the Parliament. Do not waste CID time on minor matters, they have more important tasks waiting. If this is an issue let the Parliament procedures to take actions.

Do not blame this guy since all participating at the inagural ceremony were previously informed that they could sit in any place in Parliament. The officials at the Parliament if there were any reserved places boards should have been placed at the respective seats and this embarrassment would never have happened. Also I seen the media interview which took place and the interviewer was asking very personal questions which do not fall under their purview. Every individual could follow his religion and God and no one can contest as this is provided for in the Constitution. Some of these media guys try to inflate an incident making a mountain of a molehill. !!!!!!!!!!

@Halith- you seems to be linked with animals. He is a physician and was attached to Sri Lankan Health service. He is presently under interdiction / dismissed from service for spurious reasons. That is why he was entitled to contest the parliamentary seat. Some people who do not know the full history wish to give their two cents worth of third standard knowledge including you.

Some members of the Parliament as Opposition, and the members of Civil Society who do this kind of childish things should stop. Please understand the change that took place in the earth that you are living on 21.09.2024 and accept the reality. People are more intelligent to understand your media practice. If you want to survive in politico and the country as a member in Civil Society, act according to the reality of the land, Our priorities are as we citizen of this holy land. . 1.How to repay our 100$ Billion loan? 2.How to make a god governance and reestablish rule of law? 3.How to uplift the household economy? 4.How to stop the people who flee from our country for economic reasons? 5.How to build a reintegrated and united nation? 6.How to punish all wrong doing people in the past Please stop talking about the Parliament canteen and sitting on the chair of opposition leader. It justifies the right decision of the people and your OPPOSITION LEADER SEAT will be permanent.

@Aquarius: Did you note that the seat was never assigned to opposition leader. But after becoming the opposition leader, he wanted to be on seat number 8. If he wanted that, he should have requested earlier with the Parliament staff!!

Tax paying citizens Saturday, 23 November 2024 08:50 PM
He has done nothing wrong. Seat was not reserved so he sat there end of story. Why should we give respect to others the seating does not matter right so anyone can sit on any seat. Wasting tax payers money to bring useless issues to courts. Think before taking action. There is so much problem in the country than seating order shame on the opposition leaders who has order him to vacate.

I don't think this seat was designed to anyone on the first day. So refusal was fine, but could have handled it in a better way.

I am over 70 years old a original Jaffna born Tamilan even if I am holding a German citizenship presently living in London for the last 25 years was proud to be a Jaffna Tamilan until the last general election, now I feel dam shame to be a Jaffna Tamilan after a group of Jaffna citizens elected this guy. I am telling those people that I myself involved in politics from my childhood and support our cause for every stages in different platforms according to the ground situation. That’s politics not the stupid thing like you are all selecting a joker to represent our Tamil community in parliament. It is really a dam shame every Tamil person wherever they are living. It is a biggest stupid mistake by a group of people elected an idiot to parliament. Try to correct your stand in the near future.

Let it be—race and cultural divides still exist in our country, and they’re not going to disappear anytime soon. It's his first day, and his actions over the past few months have been marked by a lot of activity. Now that he has assumed his position, let him take the time to learn what he might not yet know. That said, why are people complaining about his actions? Did they raise the same concerns when past ministers and MPs were causing chaos in Parliament, throwing chili powder, and so on? Where is the consistency? Why the double standards? We don’t need another aragalaya—let’s address issues constructively and avoid further turmoil.
