Commando Staff Sergeant arrested for giving firearm to his brother

A Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Second Commando Regiment of Kilinochchi army camp was arrested for removing a T-56 assault rifle from the camp and giving it to his brother to carry out the recent shooting in Ahungalla.

The STF and Elpitiya Division Criminal Investigation Division officers made the arrest at the Kilinochchi Camp yesterday.

Police said the T-56 firearm belonging to the Second Commando Regiment of the Kilinochchi Camp, used in the shooting incident in front of a hotel in Ahungalla last Wednesday. 

The main suspect in the shooting was killed by the STF last Thursday (13).

Investigation revealed that the military man removed the firearm from the camp and gave it to his brother who was previously arrested over the Ahungalla shooting.

The 41-year-old Sergeant from Melsiripura was arrested while on duty with two mobile phones. He was handed over to Ahungalla Police Station for further investigation.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
