Farmers are given water from waterways managed by the government; they're given fertiliser at a concessionary rate; they sometimes receive crop damage compensation. Considering the economic climate of the country, this industry is heavily subsidised, putting a lot of burden on the tax payer. Don't they have a responsibility of selling at least part of their harvest to the government that looks after them? It is the issue and they allow their rice mafia friends to buy rice at bargain prices from the debt ridden, helpless farmers without imposing a minimum controlled price, allowing their friends to earn as much as possible to cover their expenses on the NPP election campaign.

The politicians such as Mr. Kavinda Jayawardene MUST be thrown out of Parliament. Farmers are given subsidized fertilizers, free water and other allowances. They must sell their paddy to the Government. If they want to sell their paddy to Private Rice Mills, they must pay back the money the Government has spent for them. Sri Lankan voters will throw out opportunistic politicians such as Kavinda Jayawardene in the next election.
