Circular on cladding of attire for public officers issued
A circular has been issued regarding the ‘attire of public officers', permitting them to dress in appropriate and modest attire for males and females to preserve the dignity of the public service in office.
The circular was issued by the Public Administration Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunne today.
The provisions have been introduced with the approval of the Cabinet Ministers to the effect that "When public officers arrive at their office premises during the office hours.
According to the circular, males should be dressed in trousers and shirts or national dress, whilst females should be dressed in sarees, Kandian (Osari) or any other appropriate and modest attire so as to preserve the dignity of the public service.
Since the said provisions were introduced in this manner, it has been reported that certain Heads of Institutions order female officers to wear only sarees or Kandian sarees (Osari) when they are present in offices.
Public officers should be allowed to dress in appropriate and modest attire so as to preserve the dignity of the public service during their presence in their respective offices while performing duties. Further, it should be applicable for field duty as well.
The public officer should be dressed in the national dress or the prescribed attire within parliament, court, special events such as national or international functions or conferences. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
