Chinese national arrested at BIA with Rs. 3.9 million cigarette consignment

Colombo, April 11 (Daily Mirror) - A 35-year-old Chinese businessman was arrested by Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (11) for attempting to smuggle a consignment of cigarettes valued at Rs. 3,915,000.

The suspect had arrived from Kuala Lumpur at 12.50 a.m. on Batik Air flight OD-297.

Customs officials said the passenger was intercepted while attempting to take the undeclared cigarette consignment out of the airport.

Following a formal investigation, the entire stock of Chinese-made cigarettes was confiscated. The suspect was also fined Rs. 100,000 by Customs authorities.
