Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Chinese government has donated the entire fabric requirement for Sri Lanka’s 2025 school uniform programme, amounting to Rs. 5,171 million, as a grant. A formal ceremony to mark the handover was held yesterday (16) at the Ministry of Education.
The announcement was made at the event attended by Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, during which a certificate was exchanged between the two officials, confirming that the full fabric quota for the coming year had been provided.
Speaking at the event, Minister Amarasuriya expressed appreciation for China’s continued support: “Sri Lanka and China share a long-standing friendship built on cooperation. This donation of uniforms for our schoolchildren is another important milestone in that relationship.”
She noted that while China had contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s school uniform needs in 2023 and 2024, the 2025 donation covers the entire national requirement a crucial contribution during challenging times for the country.
The Sri Lankan government, through the Department of Foreign Resources, has already submitted a request to the Chinese Embassy seeking similar support for the 2026 school year.
Minister Amarasuriya added, “On behalf of our children and parents, I express heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese government and its people for their generous assistance.”
