Colombo, March 10 (Daily Mirror)- Children in many schools are vulnerable to disasters due to the poor quality of buildings, a government MP told Parliament today.

"There are low-quality buildings in ten schools in the Kaduwela area alone," MP Kaushalya Ariyaratne said.

"Girls' schools do not have facilities to dispose of sanitary pads," she added.

This is a well known fact and every government overlooked or did not care. In many rural areas the schools are in destitute conditions for years and getting worse. But we have money to import vehicles, cater to the tourists , building highways and so on. Even the elite rich people have all the money for their enjoyment but no money for these poor children. Very sad situation.

Low quality should be defined with specifics, only specific issue is lack of place to dispose sanitary pads. Other than that it is more of a general typical NPP type comnent.

True, some remote schools do not even have toilet/water facilities, some schools lack Furnitures, some schools do not have enough teachers. These are the things that the Education Department should consider. Trust our Hon. Prime Minister will do the best considering the facts.

Construction is a honey pot for rent seeking politicians and administrators . First, prove the buildings unsafe and prosecute the architects, quantity surveyors, contractors, and government officials who authorised payment. Otherwise, this comedy will keep repeating.
