Child drowns in hotel swimming pool in Sigiriya

A five-year-old child has died after drowning in a swimming pool at a hotel in the Audangawa area in Sigiriya.

Police said the child had been in the pool with his parents when the incident occurred yesterday (08) evening. The child, a resident of Dalugama, Kelaniya, reportedly got into difficulty while swimming.

He was rushed to the Dambulla Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on admission.

Notably, this incident comes amid a rising number of drowning cases in the country, with police records showing that at least seven children and students lost their lives in separate drowning incidents last month, including several in swimming pools.

Sigiriya Police are conducting further investigations into the latest incident.

VERY SAD. OBVIOUSLY HAVING THE PARENTS IN THE POOL TOO IS A WORRY, AS TO WHY THEY WERE NOT KEEPING AN EYE ON THE CHILD AND SWIMMING CLOSE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE CHILD. NOT SURE IF THE CHILD WAS IN THE SHALLOW END OR DEEP END OF THE POOL.

This is very very sad. Were the parents keeping a vigilant eye on this child who obviously could not swim and were the parents too good swimmers? Did the pool have a safety fence or is a safety fence mandatory in these hotel pools? Is there a pool guard present? Did the child wander into this unfenced pool? So many questions to be asked by the Coroner and hopefully prevent such a tragedy recurring.

This is indeed a sad story. The parents have to accept blame for a serious lapse on their part as the child was only five years old. I can well imagine what they are going through now.How sad as I feel so much though they are unknown. As the number of drowning deaths have reached high levels. May he not encounter such a misfortune in his journey through Samsara.

The upbringing of children in Sri Lanka is miserable. Children in Sri Lanka are allowed to do anything without being disciplined. Toddlers are dragged along to smoky pubs at night instead of sleeping at home in bed. But parents are unable to look after their children. Hopefully, the parents will be severely punished for violating their duty of supervision.

The Hotel should always have 1 or 2 life guards looking after the pool and the guests. this is a mandatory requrement as per the SOP of a star class hotel. whether it be 1 star 2 star 3 star 4 star or 5 star. the child could have been saved if a pool attendant was there watching the guests in the pool. The Hotel should take take the full responsibility for this tragedy and they must compansate for the loss of life of the child to the parents. usually star class hotels insure all the in house guest. this may be a mushroom hotel owned by a mudalali who does not know any hotel standards.

Did the hotel employ a lifeguard with first age skills? If not, the hotel is criminally liable for the death.
