Child cancer cases on the rise in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sept. 4 (Daily Mirror) - The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) has reported an increase in child cancer cases in Sri Lanka, with nearly 900 new cases diagnosed annually.

According to Dr. Suraj Perera, Consultant Community Physician attached to the NCCP, the Registrar General’s Department records around 200 child deaths due to cancer each year. He noted that this figure has remained consistent since 2019, while over the past 15 years, annual cases have generally ranged between 600 and 800.

Dr. Perera emphasized that many of these deaths could have been prevented, as affected children had a chance of recovery, but diagnoses were often made too late.
