Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicide imports allowed from today: Aluthgamage

Permission will be granted to import chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides from today, Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.

He said this while addressing the weekly cabinet media briefing at the Information Department.

Minister Aluthgamage said that as a government that is sensitive towards the people, it had been decided yesterday to remove the gazette notification issued on April 26, 2021.

However, he emphasized that there had been no change in the government's policy on green agriculture.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has established a Presidential Task Force for Green Agriculture.

With the decision, the private sector will get the opportunity to import chemical fertilizers and sell them in the local market, Minister Aluthgamae said.

The gazette notification in this regard will be issued by the end of the day, he said.

It has been emphatically stated in the Policy Statement "Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour" that action would be initiated to build a developed agricultural economy and to create an opportunity for the local and international consumer to avail toxin-free agriculture products within the next decade as well as to introduce eco-friendly crops. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
