Central Bank launches digital payment promotion campaign 2025

As modern technology and digital payments play a critical role in driving economic development and uplifting the quality of life of citizens, the Central Bank asserted the need for improved focus on popularising digital payments, particularly with the involvement of government institutions, businesses and financial institutions.
The financial sector regulator noted that while the digital payment facilities are available, there is room to simplify the processes and use of technology by the financial institutions to serve all segments of society.
In an effort to encourage the uptake of digital payments in the country, the Central Bank kicked off a promotional campaign under the theme ‘Shaping the Future through Digital Transactions’ last week in Hambantota.
Launched by Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the campaign was organised with the support of Hambantota District Secretary Bimal Indrajith De Silva.
This awareness campaign is the first in a series of initiatives by the Central Bank, aimed at accelerating the adoption of digital payments islandwide, aligning with the broader strategy of the government and Central Bank to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth through digitalisation.
The event drew the attention of the financial institutions, telecommunication service providers, public officials, micro, small and medium enterprises and public.
The Central Bank acknowledged that similar islandwide awareness campaigns should be rolled out as it would increase the financial inclusion in the remote areas of the country, enabling all citizens to benefit from digital payments.
The event also served as a platform for the banks, finance companies, e-money service providers such as telecommunication companies and mobile payment application providers, to facilitate the registration of digital payment applications.
The event also provided guidance on using mobile phones to purchase goods from the vendors present at the venue, using the LANKAQR payment method.
LANKAQR is considered as a fast, safe, less expensive and an easy way to make payments for their daily needs.
