Catholic Church in Sri Lanka calls for an independent prosecution office

April 17, Daily Mirror - The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka today called for the setting up of an independent prosecution office to ensure that those who are found responsible for the Easter Sunday bomb attacks could be dealt with effectively.

"We call for an independent prosecution office as we feel that the Attorney General's office might be marred with conflicts of interest," spokesman for the Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando told a briefing.

Also, he said there are reports of witnesses being threatened.

Fr. Fernando added that all members of the intelligence units, police and defence establishments cannot be blamed for the attacks.

"Only certain members of the intelligence units, police and defence establishments are responsible," Fr. Fernando said.
