Catholic Church does not want Nilantha Jayawardene sentenced to death: Fr. Cyril Gamini

Colombo, July 21 (Daily Mirror) - Referring to a comment made by Director, Mass Communications, Catholic Church of Sri Lanka Fr. Jude Krishantha that DIG Nilantha Jayawardene who was expelled from the police service should be subjected to death sentence, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Colombo, Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said today that it is not the official stance of the Catholic Church.

“Fr. Jude informed us that he mentioned on Sunday that he was expressing his own opinion. The Father expressed his regrets and there is no issue with regard to the matter,” Fr. Fernando said.

“The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka and the global catholic church does not endorse the death sentence,” he stressed.

“DIG Jayawardene has been expelled by the Police Commission following a Supreme Court order and the recommendations by the Presidential Commission which probed the Easter Sunday bomb attacks of 2019. We also expect that all recommendations made by the Presidential Commission will be implemented. We also hope that more information will come out of probes carried out on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks,” he added.

Fr. Fernando also said the Archbishop of Colombo did not specifically want the re-appointment of CID Chief Shani Abeysekera and Secretary Ministry of Public Security Ravi Senevirane.

“The Cardinal only wanted all officers who were transferred in 2020 to be reinstated. He never mentioned any names,” he said.
