Cardinal skipped Easter service on divine warning: Wimal Weerawansa:

Colombo, August 5 (Daily Mirror) - National Freedom Front (NFF) leader and former Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa claimed that the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, may have skipped the Easter service this year after being "informed by God" not to attend a move he described as unprecedented in history.

Speaking during a television programme last night, Weerawansa suggested that the Cardinal’s absence was unusual and may have had spiritual or divine significance. He further said that while intelligence services are capable of providing prior warnings, they cannot guarantee the security of key religious locations such as St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade.

Weerawansa pointed out that Cardinal Ranjith had previously attended Easter services both before and after the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. He also alleged political interference and mishandling of intelligence information surrounding the attack.

He referenced a senior police officer who was removed from his post after providing prior warning about the Easter attack, while another official who allegedly ignored the warning was later promoted as Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security. He further noted that retired SSP Shani Abeysekara was appointed as Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the aftermath.

Quoting a past statement made in Parliament by Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake, Weerawansa said he believed Rathnayake’s claims were made with valid reasoning.

The NFF leader went on to accuse the current government of engaging in what he described as the "biggest contract to destroy the state." He referred to the recent arrest of a former Navy Commander over actions taken during his tenure as an intelligence officer and suggested that such moves are part of a broader attempt to dismantle the country’s military and intelligence infrastructure.

Weerawansa claimed that the defeat of the LTTE was largely due to successful naval operations targeting weapons shipments and accused pro-LTTE diaspora groups of seeking revenge by undermining the armed forces and pushing for constitutional changes, including the activation of the provincial council system.

He warned that upcoming constitutional amendments could result in the erasure of Sri Lanka's history from school curricula, alleging that such efforts are part of a wider agenda to destabilise the country.
