Card system soon for SLTB and private transport to curb fraud: Deputy Minister

Colombo, April 30 (Daily Mirror) - Since cash transactions often lead to fraud and corruption, a card payment system will be introduced as soon as possible for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and the private transport sector, Transport and Highways Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena said.

He made this statement while attending an event yesterday to appoint and officially welcome the new Chairman of the National Transport Commission (NTC).

"It’s very important to introduce a card system for the transport sector. With the new administration, it will be easier to stay connected with the people and offer better services. The NTC will also be able to work more efficiently," the Deputy Minister said.

"Following the mandate from the people and our vision, we are working to improve every area of the transport sector and take it to a higher level," he added.

He also said that a new programme is being started through the NTC to better organize transport services, including three-wheeler services and school transport services, which are currently handled by different groups.

Speaking at the event, newly appointed NTC Chairman P.A. Chandrapala said the NTC is the main organization responsible for regulating the transport sector on behalf of the government. "This is a public institution, and it’s our duty to serve the people," he said.

"One person alone can’t make a system successful, but they can lead it. It takes teamwork to meet the expectations of the people. I believe we will receive the support we need from political leaders. This institution works to provide quality services for the public while also helping to strengthen the country’s economy," the new Chairman added.
