Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - The launch of the "Calypso" train service, featuring special open-air viewing facilities between Nanu Oya and Demodara, earned Rs. 720,000 on its first day, Railways Additional General Manager Operations Vajira Polwattage said.
He said the train began its journey from the Nanu Oya Railway Station to Demodara yesterday (8), with all 172 seats available, although only 72 passengers had booked tickets on the opening day.
According to Polwattage, if all seats had been booked, the revenue would have amounted to Rs. 153,000.
The Calypso train has been specially designed to showcase the natural beauty along the route. It features open-air viewing, onboard entertainment including live music, and facilities for food and drinks. A highlight of the journey is a brief stop at the world-famous Nine Arch Bridge, allowing tourists to enjoy its scenic charm.
Another unique feature is the passage through several tunnels along the way.
Passengers on the Calypso train are also treated to a complimentary set of delicious snacks.
"The entire train journey takes approximately four-and-a-half hours.
The Nanu Oya–Demodara railway line, renowned for its scenic beauty, is a major attraction for both local and foreign tourists. Due to its growing popularity among international travellers, the Railway Department expects the "Calypso" service to contribute significantly to the Sri Lankan economy and boost foreign exchange earnings," Polwattage said.
"The Calypso train will operate from Demodara to Nanu Oya every Monday and from Nanu Oya to Demodara every Tuesday. It will depart from Nanu Oya at 8:10 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive at Demodara Railway Station by 12:25 p.m. The return journey will begin at 1:15 p.m. from Demodara and reach Nanu Oya at 5:35 p.m," he said.
Ticket prices have been set at Rs. 10,000 per passenger for the Nanu Oya to Demodara trip and Rs. 3,500 for the return journey from Demodara to Nanu Oya.
Polwattage said that the "Calypso" train offers a memorable and valuable experience for all travellers. He also revealed plans to add more open observation compartments to the train in the future to enhance the sightseeing experience.
