Colombo, Dec. 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved the establishment of two new wind power plants each with a capacity of 50 megawatts in Mullikulum, Mannar, as part of the government’s push to generate 70% of Sri Lanka’s electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
The approval follows a decision made on 10 February 2025 to invite proposals from private-sector developers for the Mullikulum Wind Power Park, a 100MW project to be implemented under a Build–Own–Operate model with a 20-year monitoring period.
Proposals were called through an international competitive bidding process, resulting in seven submissions.
After evaluating the bids, and based on the recommendations of the Cabinet-appointed negotiation committee, the Cabinet has now endorsed the proposal of the Minister of Power to award the contracts.
The two 50MW wind power stations will be developed by:
Consortium of Vidullanka PLC and David Pieris Motor Company (Lanka) Ltd
WindForce PLC

The President promised the residents of Mannar that windowed project will not be fone without their consent, so have they given consent or was it another false promise given to the public.

NO PROJECT CAN SUCCEED IN THE NORTH-EAST. IF THE PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE IT. LET'S TAKE SAMBOOR ( TRNCO ) FOR EXAMPLE.

Such a shame. The cabinet has not considered all the facts considering how terrible this would be for the environment and the eco system. The maintenence, disposal and storm damage to the windmills are a costly tax burden. Cabinet has given into short-sighted, short-term gains.

Terrible for the nature. One last place flamingos used to come will also be lost. Build nuclear plants instead. Nuclear is the future.

The government’s decision to approve two 50MW wind power projects in Mannar is a highly commendable and forward-looking initiative. These projects will play a crucial role in meeting the nation’s rapidly growing demand for electrical energy. It is hoped that external actors—whether religious groups or politically motivated individuals—will refrain from obstructing these developments, which are of national significance.
Wind power is a valuable national resource, and every government has both the right and the responsibility to utilise it effectively for the country’s progress. It is also noteworthy that the hill-country communities did not oppose the establishment of large-scale hydro power projects in the past, enabling the nation to maintain a stable supply of electricity. In the same spirit, the Mannar wind projects should be allowed to proceed without hindrance for the greater benefit of the country.
