Cabinet approves rural roads enhancement in Northern and Eastern Provinces

Colombo, Feb 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved the implementation of a rural roads enhancement and upgrading programme in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Under this initiative, priority will be given to developing 1,500 kilometres of roads in the Northern Province and 500 kilometres in the Eastern Province, covering every Divisional Secretariat division. This decision comes in response to the severely deteriorated condition of roads in these regions.

Recognising rural road development as a key priority in its development agenda, the government plans to facilitate road renovation, construction and maintenance through a comprehensive approach.

The selection of roads for upgrading will involve input from the public, community-based organizations and local government institutions. Additionally, the proposed road list will require approval from the relevant Divisional and District Coordination Committees.
