Cabinet approves resumption of Baseline Road Extension Project phase III

Colombo, Jan. 20 (Daily Mirror) - The government has approved the resumption of Phase III of the Baseline Road Extension Project, which involves the construction of a six-lane road from Kirulapona Junction to Dutugemunu Street on the Colombo-Horana Road.

Initial approval for the project was granted at the Cabinet meeting held on November 11, 2009. However, implementation was postponed in 2022 due to the economic crisis, following recommendations made by the Officers’ Committee for Re-Strategizing and Accelerating Large-Scale Development Projects.

Although construction work had been temporarily suspended, the project has been identified as a priority infrastructure development initiative under the National Road Master Plan. Authorities have already completed approximately 90 percent of the required land acquisition for the project.

Once completed, the new road is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion along the Colombo-Horana corridor, contributing to improved urban mobility and enhanced economic productivity.
