Colombo, Feb. 10 (Daily Mirror) - In a significant step towards inclusive public transport, the Cabinet has approved a pilot project to introduce air-conditioned low-floor buses equipped with facilities for people with special needs, under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.

Procurement for 10 such buses has been completed, and they are scheduled to arrive in the country by March 15, 2026. The buses are designed to ensure easier access, greater comfort, and a safer travel experience for passengers with disabilities.

Recognising that the Sri Lanka Transport Board currently lacks the infrastructure to operate and maintain these modern buses, the Cabinet has approved their transfer to Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Company, established under the SLTB in July 2025. The company will oversee the operation of the buses as part of efforts to modernise urban public transport.

This pilot project is part of a larger plan to deploy 100 modern, comfortable, and technologically advanced buses in the Colombo urban area, marking a major step forward in creating an accessible and inclusive transport system for all, particularly for people with special needs.

All buses are required to be replaced with low floor buses and the current ones are basically the lorries chassis and not fit for the safety of passengers and pedestrians
