Colombo, June 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has directed officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to appear before the commission this week to provide clarifications regarding the ongoing investigation into the former head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Suresh Sallay.
HRCSL Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa said that the commission has already launched an inquiry based on a complaint lodged by the relatives of Sallay. As part of this initial probe, HRCSL officials recently visited the CID premises to record a statement from Suresh Sallay and also gathered statements from other detainees held in adjacent cells.
In addition to these inquiries, a team of officials from the Human Rights Commission visited the Colombo National Hospital yesterday (08) to look into the welfare and situation concerning Sallay, who is receiving medical attention there.
The CID officers handling the case were initially summoned to appear before the HRCSL last week. However, they informed the commission of their inability to attend on that date and requested an alternative timeline to present their findings.
Following this request, Commissioner Punchihewa said that the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the relevant investigative unit, along with a team of CID officers, has been strictly notified to present themselves before the Human Rights Commission within the course of this week.
