CID flooded with 60,000 complaints

  • CID struggling to handle so many complaints
  • Some complaints to be referred to newly established CCIB

Colombo, Sept. 5 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been flooded with 60,000 complaints and the government is considering reducing the number of complaints received to the CID as it is difficult for the department to handle such a large number of complaints, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said yesterday.

The Minister said in a move to reduce the burden on the CID, some complaints will be referred to the newly established Central Crimes Investigation Bureau (CCIB) under the supervision of the Inspector General of Police.

He said the CCIB has been empowered to conduct any investigation or raid.

The Minister told media after the inauguration of the CCIB head office that the government is determined to ensure an efficient investigation process in the country and added that CCIB will investigate complaints received to it in a short period of time.

The Minister said the government has decided to make numerous structural changes in the police department and that establishment of the Criminal Investigations Department is one such change.

When asked whether the pending complaints in the CID will be referred to the CCIB, he said if the IGP decides so, some complaints will be referred to the CCIB and that people can now complain directly to the CCIB.

The police department is grappling with a shortage of 2,8000 police personnel and the government has decided to recruit 5,000 police personnel this year and another 5,000 next year.
