CID complaint lodged over use of cancer drug marketed by unregistered company

Colombo, January 26 (Daily Mirror) - MP Mujibur Rahman today lodged a complaint with the CID against the import and use of a drug on cancer patients.

“This drug was used on one of the patients known to me. She is suffering from cancer. The doctors informed that the drug is proven to be ineffective. Also, we found out from the NMRA that the drug is not registered. Therefore, I decided to lodge a complaint with the CID and requested a probe,” MP Rahman told the Daily Mirror.

Some of the findings of the Auditor General’s Annual Report 2024 •In 2023, Prednisolone Acetate eye drops failed quality tests after they had already been issued to hospitals. •At Nuwara Eliya District Hospital, 12 out of 17 patients permanently lost vision in one eye, while three others lost more than 70% of their vision. •Out of the medical supplies issued to government hospitals, medicines, surgical and laboratory materials worth Rs. 4,213 million were withdrawn from use in 2024 due to nonconformity, while another Rs.1,367.9 million worth of medicines were temporarily suspended due to non-conformity. •The most concerning aspect is that not a single case has been filed by the NMRA against the violators.
