CID arrests suspect in Rs. 100M ‘Urumaya’ scam



Colombo, October 1 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a suspect connected to a massive ‘Urumaya’ deed certificate scam that defrauded over Rs. 100 million from hundreds of victims in the Eastern Province.

Police said the suspect, a resident of Maharagama, assisted the main perpetrator in a scheme that promised ‘Urumaya’ certificates in exchange for payments of Rs. 600,000 per person. Investigations revealed that 164 people from Kalmunai had been defrauded, with around Rs. 15 million deposited into the suspect’s bank account through the operation.

Authorities also reported that about 50 victims were taken to the Sirikotha headquarters during the last presidential election.

The main suspect, a woman from Matale, had been arrested earlier and is accused of masterminding the scam, misappropriating an estimated Rs. 84 million.
