CEA urges devotees to minimize plastic waste during Kandy Esala Perahera

Colombo, July 31 (Daily Mirror) - The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has requested all devotees attending the Kandy Esala Perahera to properly dispose of waste and avoid bringing plastic items into the city during the festival, which will take place from July 30 to August 10, 2025.

Officials said the event, which draws large crowds annually, generates a considerable volume of solid waste each day, with plastic waste being particularly prominent. Among the most common items discarded are wax paper sheets used by spectators to sit on while watching the procession.

The CEA is urging the public to seek eco-friendly alternatives for such items and to either dispose of them responsibly or take them back home after use.

To address these concerns, the CEA has partnered with several local authorities and institutions including the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy District Secretariat, Kandy Urban Council, the Police Environment Unit, and the local education and health departments to conduct awareness campaigns. These efforts include street dramas, educational programs, and raids aimed at curbing the use of plastic.

A key highlight this year will be the involvement of over 43 schools from the Central Province, where "environmental pilot" students will take part in street performances featuring traditional "Virindu" songs, skits, and dances to promote sustainable practices.

The CEA reminds devotees to dispose of waste only at designated locations and to help protect the sacred and historic surroundings of Kandy by minimizing the use of polythene and other non-biodegradable materials.
