Colombo, May 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Constitutional Council (CC) has rejected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s nominee for the post of Auditor General, reliable sources told Daily Mirror.
Members of the CC were compelled to take a vote as they were divided on the issue, according to sources.
Accordingly, five members voted against the nominee while three voted in favor. Those who voted against included Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, his nominee MP Ajith P. Perera, and one of the three members representing civil society. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake, and NPP MP Abubakar Adambawa were among those who voted in favor.
The rejection comes after it was reported that the President’s nominee was an outsider, rather than an officer from the Auditor General’s Department.Opposition MPs Dayasiri Jayasekera and Harsha de Silva openly alleged in Parliament that the tradition was to nominate a person from within the Auditor General’s Department.
Auditor unions also requested President Anura Kumara Dissanayake not to appoint a person from outside the department. The Sri Lanka Audit Services Union, Association of State Assistant Auditors Union, and State Auditors Union have made a written request to this effect. However, they stated that an outsider can be appointed only if there is no suitable person from the Auditor General’s Department.
