CAA warns traders of fraudulent phone calls demanding money

Colombo, August 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has issued a warning to traders and manufacturers regarding fraudulent phone calls made by individuals falsely posing as CAA officials to demand money.

The Authority said it had received complaints from several areas across the island about callers who contacted factory and business owners, alleging that their institutions had committed wrongdoing. These fraudsters have reportedly pressured traders to deposit money into personal bank accounts to avoid supposed legal action.

The CAA pointed out that no officer is authorized to demand or accept money from traders or manufacturers under any circumstances. Traders are urged to remain vigilant and verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Authority.

If such fraudulent calls are received, the public is advised to report the incident to the nearest police station and provide the caller’s phone number and bank details. Complaints can also be made to the CAA via the hotline 1977 or by sending a text message to 077 1088922.
