Colombo, March 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Attorney General today informed Supreme Court that the Consumers Affairs Authority would withdraw its gazette notification issued directing all traders not to charge for polyethylene bags issued to consumers when they are purchasing goods.
The Attorney General made these remarks when the fundamental rights petition filed by Centre for Environmental Justice was called before Supreme Court.
The petitioner is seeking an order directing the authorities to formulate practical procedures for minimizing the manufacturing by producers and use of polythene and single-use plastics by the
customers which cause severe harm to the environment.
The petitioner stated that plastic bags or polythene has resulted in many detrimental environmental effects including animal choking, pollution, blockage of channels, rivers, and streams, and landscape disfigurement.
The petitioner stated that the Consumer Affairs Authority had issued a directive published in Gazette No.1571/25 dated 2008.10.17 to the effect that no trader shall at the time of selling of goods levy any charge directly or indirectly on consumers for any type of bags or wrappers issued to the consumers. The petitioner maintained that an introduction of a levy on the use of plastics for consumers, manufacturers or importers in different capacities, would substantially reduce the average plastic consumption. Such a non-coercive measure will encourage broad changes in
behaviour over time by influencing people’s understanding of the issue.
Senior Counsel Ravindranath Dabare appeared for the Attorney General. Deputy Solicitor General Awanthi Perera appeared for the Attorney General.

If we don't wake up now,we shall meet the natural catastrophe in the very soon future, every vegetable, fruit and super markets, must stop issuing plastic bags and ask the customer to bring their own biodegradable bags as palmera leaf bags, this will reduce the unnecessary plastic garbage.

They have found plastic water bottles leach nano plastics into the water. Even seafood and vegetable are found to intake plastics. So please ban plastics bags being given in store. Import jute bags or other multi use bags. Is it really worth infecting kids with terminally ill diseases such as cancer?

Good decision. But, will the shop owners charge for the polythene bag. They don't think a second before giving a polythene bag. Ads. by the government against the use of polythene and plastic should be pragmatic. We saw on TV, an ad. featuring children singing tic, tic, tic plastic. I am not sure if it would be effective. They may rather remind people to carry a reusable bag in their office bags, so that they can use it when shopping on the way home after work. We don't see recycling happening in Sri Lanka, as much as in developed countries. The relevant ministry should assign somebody to look into the reasons and come up with plans to improve it.
More inconvience for customers Friday, 29 March 2024 02:37 PM
The Centre for Environmental Justice are social terrorists. Consumers will be more inconvenienced because of this ban.

START THE PROCESS OF BANNING ALL PLASTIC BAGS, CONTAINERS AND THE LIKES TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT. I AM SURE PEOPLE WILL THEN START BRINGING THEIR OWN BAGS OR PAYING FOR BAGS THAT CAN BE RECYCLED.
